Tyre pressure

Tyre pressure

You should check your motorcycles tyre pressure regularly but make sure you do it when the tyres are cold. With the right pressure, you have more grip and your tyres dont wear as quickly. We check your tyre pressure for you during our free tyre check.

Tread depth

Tread depth

Although the legal minimum tread depth is 1mm, its safer to get your tyres replaced before you reach the minimum. Whilst safety is one concern, it can also affect your performance and fuel efficiency.

General wear & damage

General wear and tear

If you notice any bulges, cracks, lumps or cuts in your tyres, you need to get them checked. Sometimes driving over potholes or debris can cause damage. Sometimes tyres might be older than you realise, weve seen tyres that were put on new that had clearly been left on a shelf for too long.

Frequently asked questions

Why get a free tyre check from Vertu Motorcycles?

Trusting your tyres is essential for confidence on the road. Our fully-trained technicians help ensure that your tyres are ready for the ride. If you want to wait while we fit them, the kettles always on and theres free Wi-Fi for you to use while you wait. Assuming youre not browsing the new and used bikes or chatting to the team, that is.

How long does a motorcycle tyre last?

This depends on the tyre, your bike, how you ride it and how much you ride it. Google it and you will get an answer from 150 to 10,000 miles, thats why you need to check them. If you dont do many miles, you still need to check them and its advisable to change tyres after five years.

What is the legal tread limit for motorcycle tyres?

The legal tread limit for a motorcycle tyre is 1mm. However we dont recommend going to the limit.

How do I know when my motorcycle tyres need replacing?

If your tyres are looking worn, a bit odd or a bit old, they will need replacing. Also, if you notice your bike is beginning to feel a bit squirrely, then a tyre check is definitely in order.

Do motorcycle tyres wear out faster than car tyres?

Yes they do, thats down to the contact patch we talked about above. Plus the need to use softer compounds to help the bikes grip and manoeuvrability. If you do a lot of motorway miles, you will see your rear tyre flatten-off, more like a car tyre. Car tyres can be engineered to last much longer because they dont need to be able to lean around corners like a bikes tyre.

How long does the free tyre check take?

Our free tyre check takes approximately 20 minutes. Long enough for a cup of tea and a good browse of the bikes. You could even kick the odd tyre or two (please ask first).
